Given that The Photography Show didn’t happen, NAB and Photokina aren’t happening, and many governments around the world are telling us that we could potentially be in lockdown for more than six months, IBC, PPE and the rescheduled TPS might not happen, either. But Canon is pressing on with their gear announcements regardless. Canon has announced that they’re hosting a virtual press conference on April 20th to announce some new gear....

One of the great things about DSLRs was that the shutter was closed and the mirror was down when you weren’t actively shooting a photo. This meant that when swapping out lenses, your sensor was largely protected from the elements. With mirrorless cameras, though, not so much. A new Canon patent shows an in-camera mechanism that looks similar to a shutter (but isn’t), that keeps your sensor protected when no lens is attached....

Canon has developed a new 12.6-megapixel CMOS sensor designed primarily for monitoring and industrial applications. What’s special about this sensor is that it shoots multiple exposures simultaneously each time it takes a photo to maximise dynamic range.It’s a 1-inch backside-illuminated sensor, that overcomes the limitations of existing sensor technology by splitting the image up into 736 areas. Each of these different areas automatically determines the best exposure range for that part of the image, allowing it to shoot high and low-exposure shots simultaneously....

Cosina has announced three new Voigtlander 35mm f/2 lenses. One of them is the Voigtlander Ultron Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical Type II VM for Leica M, available in Black or Silver and the other two are Leica M and Sony E mount versions of the Voigtlander Apo-Lanthar 35mm F2 Aspherical VM. The horrendously named Voigtlander Ultron Vintage Line 35mm F2 Aspherical Type II VM (we’ll just call it Ultron 2 from here on out) is an update to the existing Ultron 35mm F2 Aspherical lens....

Czech photographer Martin Stranka has been awarded the first prize at the International Photography Awards 2022 with his series titled “Beautiful Accidents“. I’ve had the chance to write about some amazing and creepy AI solutions over the past couple of days. And today, I was mind-blown by another one. It’s called DALL-E 2, and yeah, it’s kinda like an AI blend of WALL-E and Salvador Dali. OpenAI’s cleverly named AI is able to create realistic “photos” based on your textual description. An astronaut riding a bike, a koala dunking a basketball, a bowl of soup that looks like a monster… You name it, DALL-E 2 will turn it into a picture that’s likely never been seen before....

If you’re thinking of buying the DJI Mavic 3, here’s some good news, at least for our European readers. From now on, you can fly this drone in fly in the new A1 Open Category. In other words, you no longer need to pass the piloting license exam, which will save you both time and money. Macro can be a tricky subject, especially if you want to be able to do it well. Chances are, most of us who’ve tried to have a go at macro have made some or all of mistakes at some point. Clearview AI came under fire for scraping billions of selfies off the Internet to sell facial recognition services to law enforcement. France’s privacy watchdog said that the company has breached Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and France has now ordered Clearview AI to delete its database. So far, Clearview AI has reportedly gathered around 10 billion selfies scraped from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Venmo. Combining selfies with facial recognition, the company has allegedly been selling the results to law enforcement organizations with no governmental oversight....

It’s always the way with Fuji, just after they announce a new camera and owners of its predecessor get all excited and pre-order, they release a new firmware to update the old one to perform almost as well as the new one. And, they’ve done it again with the Fuji X-T3, this time with the v4.00 firmware update that they claim gives it the same autofocus performance of the new Fuji X-T4....

Shaking your phone in anger now actually has a point. Well, at least if it’s Instagram bugs that frustrate you. From now on, this is how you can report any kind of problem with the app: just shake your phone and an Instagram genie will show up to ask you what’s wrong. I love shooting product photos and videos with the Aputure AL-MC. It’s such a versatile and powerful helper compared to its size. I use it on almost every product shoot. There’s only one thing that is not ideal and that’s the light spill. The MC has a super wide angle of light spread, so you will get light spilling onto your background unless you have a big studio where you can put the background system a few meters away from your scene....

Let me start by saying that I am not a professional, and I’m well aware that my movement towards to success is an ongoing process that is (hopefully) in the early stages of even bigger things to come. That being said, I think it’s a good idea to reflect on my last year or so of growth. I see a lot of macro and timelapse scroll by my screen and when the two come together, they can produce something that’s just wonderful. When you add bugs into the mix as well, you get something that’s a little bit extra special, like this beautiful short film from Thomas Blanchard. Despite describing this as an “experimental film”, Thomas combines both of these techniques masterfully to make this incredible creation....
