Sony has spoken up on the coronavirus outbreak in China and the effects it may have on its image sensor and other operations. The Nikkei reports that despite initially raising its operating profit and revenue forecasts for the current fiscal year, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki said the coronavirus “may negate our revised earnings outlook”. The issue largely seems to refer to Sony’s smartphone sensors, rather than camera sensors. Despite Sony being based in Japan, smartphones themselves are often assembled in China....

Apple has recently announced its latest flagship phone, iPhone 11, and it’s all about the camera. But before you upgrade, you may want to know is it actually worth it. Nilay Patel from The Verge has made a pretty awesome review of the latest iPhone, focusing on the triple-camera iPhone 11 Pro. It packs 12MP sensors with standard, telephoto, and ultra-wide lens, and let’s see how it performs for taking photos and videos....

Piers and jetties make wonderful subjects for long-exposure photography. It’s something about the lines leading you through the image and the perspective, combined with the poetic nature of an open body of water. But they aren’t always easy to shoot correctly, and sometimes you’ll need to shoot multiple exposures to get the result just right. It’s every actor’s worst nightmare to cause the injury or death of another person on set. But that nightmare has come true for Alec Baldwin when he fired a prop gun that killed 42-year-old Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on the set of Rust in Albuquerque, New Mexico, yesterday. Filming was being performed at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular location used in movies such as 3:10 to Yuma, Cowboys & Aliens, amongst others when reports say that a prop firearm was fired by Baldwin....

It looks like DJI is planning to make a big move in the small camera scene. After releasing the DJI Osmo Pocket, which has already drawn a large chunk of customers away from the GoPro Hero 7 Black, it seems that they may be getting ready to release an actual action camera, too. The Osmo Pocket has proven itself to be extremely capable in the tiny camera market, thanks to its 3-axis gimbal....

Whenever a product goes out of stock for any period of time, it’s usually an indication that its replacement is on the way. And if DJI’s online store is anything to go by, they’re getting ready to announce a few. All package variants of the DJI Spark and DJI Phantom 4 are completely out of stock, with many Mavic Air, Mavic 2 and Inspire 2 packages also gone. Drone DJ reports that the items are showing as out of stock in the USA online store, but I’m also seeing many of them listed as out of stock in the UK store, too....

Announced only a few days ago, the Mavic 2 drones already have their first reviews appearing. This one’s from the folks at We Talk UAV. They take out the Mavic 2 Pro and put that 1″ 10Bit Hasselblad camera to the test. DJI gave themselves a tough act to follow with the original DJI Mavic Pro or even the Mavic Pro Platinum, but it looks like they’ve actually outdone themselves....

One question I’ve been wondering to myself is this: is it better to have plans and goals in our photography, or to have none? Should we just harness our spontaneity in the streets when making images, or have some concrete plan? Should we plan for the future? Should we expect things to go to plan? Should we have goals in our photography and life? I think in a very basic sense, it is good to have some sort of direction....

There are many great photography contests out there. Still, none of them can make me laugh like the Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards and its selection of images. The jury has just announced the finalists of the 2021 contest, and just as always, there are many photos that will instantly improve your mood. This year’s final shortlist includes 42 photos plus the Portfolio and Video category entries. It showcases the biggest mix of animals seen in the competition to date....

Like all of the rich and famous, Elon Musk had a life long before he became the richest man in the world. And now pieces of that life have been sold, some for nearly $41,000. Musk’s ex-girlfriend put them up for an auction, and the majority of them include Musk’s old photos showing him as the young, baby-faced, and goofy man he once was. Jennifer Gwynne dated Elon Musk for a year, from 1994 to 1995....

This Friday, federal appeals court in Washington D.C. decided that Federal Aviation Administration has no right to require hobbyists to register their camera drones and model aircraft. As SF Gate reports, this decision came after a drone hobbyist John Taylor filed a claim against the FAA in 2016. He claimed that they don’t have the right to force him to register his aircraft. As U.S. Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh states, “Taylor does not think that the FAA had the statutory authority to issue the registration rule and require him to register....

After long drawn out speculation and worry, the FAA have finally confirmed and released the regulations regarding commercial drone use. The short version is that they’re fine with it and being able to do it is relatively easy, as long as you’re over 16 years old. Posted to the FAA website, the new “107 to Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations” sets the terms for civilian operation of small UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) devices....

You probably remember the recent copyright violation scandal involving Canon and landscape photographer Elia Locardi. He and the guys from FStoppers decided to tackle piracy in a fun and humorous way and trolled all those who tried to steal one of their tutorials. They created a fake Photographing the World 3 video and posted it on a torrent site. It started as a joke, but it revealed just how much photographers can be hypocritical about copyright....

The press release in question concerned the results of a survey conducted by the photo-printing company Photobox that focused on the habits of picture-taking within families. Admittedly it was only a small survey, conducted on 2,000 people, but it threw up some interesting results—namely that almost two thirds of fathers (61%) believe that they take better photos than their other halves, and that 68% of mothers prefer that their families’ fathers take the photos....

Last Thursday, rumours of a new Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art series lens designed specifically for Sony and L mount mirrorless cameras was leaked, with an announcement expected for this week. Now, the first real-world image of the new lens has also leaked, courtesy of Sony Alpha Rumors, and boy, is it tiny! It’s shown in the image next to the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD for full-frame Sony E mount, so we can get a rough idea of the size....

The Pentax K1 was already an impressive camera. It’s cherished by everybody who owns one. It contains features unique amongst DSLRs, such as its Pixel Shift Resolution feature. It’s seen an update, now, though, with Ricoh recently announcing the Pentax K1 Mark II, offering a couple of pretty significant upgrades. We went along to the Ricoh Pentax stand during The Photography Show to go check it out. For the most part, the K1 Mark II is near identical to the original Pentax K1....

And it does that in a tiny 422g (battery included) 112.6×69.9×45.3mm form factor… That has to be something. One interesting question is how will handling the camera be like? Is it going to be easy to handle like the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K?...
