Even though we may not feel very friendly about our world at the moment, it’s still full of beauty and wonders. Photographer Eric Gross managed to capture a piece of this beauty at Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. A photographer has won a staggeringly high amount in a recent copyright dispute. The Los Angeles Federal courts awarded photographer Dennis Fugnetti $1.2 million for the use of a pigeon photo without permission. Three years ago, Fugnetti filed the claim against anti-bird pest company Bird B Gone for using his image of a pigeon in flight for 12 years. The company sells spikes that are used to deter roosting pigeons and other birds from rooftops and balconies....

Earlier this year only NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) was able to see one, but another eclipse is just around the corner, and it will be visible here from Earth. On Tuesday 25 October, there will be a partial solar eclipse visible from most of Europe, northern Africa, the Middle East, and western parts of Asia....

Flying Squirrels are fairly common, although seldom seen members of the rodent family. The Southern Flying Squirrel is found throughout the Eastern half of the United States. The Northern version is only found in the Northern most tier of states and in Canada. One of the biggest challenges of this project was attracting, and training the squirrels to do what I needed them to do, so I could photograph them....

On Monday 17 June, a masked gunman opened fire at a federal courthouse in Dallas. Tom Fox, a Dallas Morning News photographer, was just a few feet away from him. He managed to capture a photo of the heavily armed staring straight into his lens, and it’s as impressive as it’s chilling. This one’s sure taking its time! Last September, a leaked Panasonic lens roadmap showed four new 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm f/1.8 primes being added to the L mount lineup. Well, we knew Samyang had two new astrophotography-focused lenses on the way. One of those lenses, for full-frame Sony E mount cameras, has already been announced. That’s the Samyang AF 24mm F1.8 FE, which features a dedicated custom function button that allows you to zip straight to infinity focus in an instant. The other lens, for APS-C Sony E mount, was suspected to be a shorter focal length and according to images posted to Weibo, it’s going to be the AF 12mm F2....

Here is a sweet tip we got from Adam Frimer about managing your cards while on a shoot. You start with a bunch of clean formatted cards. Place them all in a hard case facing up. This way you can see the data on each card. (Those hard cases are about $10 on amazon) After using the card and filling it up, return the card to the case with the text facing downwards....

According to the latest reports, Japanese electronics company Casio has decided to exit compact camera business. After more than two decades of producing compact digital cameras, the company has decided to withdraw from this market due to the financial loss. As Nikkei reports, Casio’s digital camera business had a loss of 500 million yen ($4.58 million) in the fiscal year that ended in March 2017. Reportedly, Casio now plans to change the strategy of its digital camera business and review the structure of its musical instrument business....

Snapchat owner Snap Inc. released its first, and likely the last, selfie drone earlier this year. Only four months after it took off the ground, Pixy drone is ready to land – straight into the trash can. According to reports, Snap is ditching any further development of its tiny selfie drone. In fact, it may already be sold out… Forever. The report comes from a “person familiar with the matter” who spoke to The Wall Street Journal about Pixy....

It looks like the race is on. After Xiaomi’s code was torn apart recently, suggesting that they’re working on a phone capable of shooting 8K 30fps video, it looks like Samsung’s S11 may be capable of the same. The team at XDA Developers, the same team that delved into the Xiaomi, has found hints that the S11 will bring 8K video after looking at the latest Samsung Camera App (presumably one that fixes this problem, too)....
