Advertisements 3D data use cases abound. For instance, it can be leveraged to create 3D digital models for display and manipulation in various viewers, 3D printed, and re-purposed in VR environments. Additionally, virtual models can be employed as teaching tools, used in conservation condition assessments of objects through time and to open new lines of inquiry and digital scholarship around such data sets. One of the current bottlenecks in the multi-step workflow that leads to the creation of original 3D data is the capture stage....

It appears that October isn’t far enough away to reliably hold a show, at least not in New York. We’ve been told by a source close to NAB Show New York that organisers have begun sending out emails informing people that the NAB Show New York, which was scheduled to take place on October 21st & 22nd at the Javits Convention Center in New York, has been cancelled. The body of the email reads as follows… There’s no mention of the cancellation on the NAB Show NY website yet, although I don’t expect it’ll be too long before that gets updated to reflect the new status of the show....

It seems that some of us will have a very special January if we look up to the skies this month. We’re expecting to have two supermoons, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse is also coinciding with that second supermoon, so should be very cool. I say some of us, as the eclipse will only see totality from Eastern Asia and across the Pacific to the western USA & Canada....

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have captured a photograph of the aurora australis shot from somewhere over the Indian Ocean, along with a train of 16 of SpaceX’s Starlink satellites – a handful of the almost-12,000 they expect to launch over the next few years. The SpaceX Starlink network of satellites has been a somewhat controversial concept. Its goal is to create a global broadband internet system that allows everybody to have easy access to fast data....

The rumor mill has dried up. This is not unusual for the Post-Pohotokina, Post PPE time of the year and so we are left with very little bits and pieces for our gear lasting souls. Enter the Canon 6DmkII. The latest rumors from CanonRumors give us some data to hand on to, though it is not really impressive. CR speculates-guesses-estimates that the camera will be announced in, or right after, NAB (April), and probably starts selling a month after at May....

Canon has announced a shiny new speedlight. The Canon 470EX-AI. It contains a new feature that’s apparently supposed to make life easier for those who use on-camera flash, but I’m really not entirely sure why. That feature is a new motorised head which allows the flash to re-orient its head when you “double half press” the shutter button. Call me cynical, but this seems to be a solution looking for a problem....

Canon Australia has issued a recall for early shipments of the video-centric Canon EOS R5c mirrorless cinema camera. According to the recall, this is due to a manufacturing defect in the autofocus system whereby the camera will excessively hunt to find focus in movie mode. Canon Australia does say that this only affects “selected units of the EOS R5 C digital cinema camera”. They say that only “a very small number of units” are affected by the issue and that the recall is specifically for those who received their units on or before March 21st, 2022....

Canon Australia’s Canon Collective events have been a great opportunity for Canon shooters in Australia to find out more about new Canon gear and to learn and improve their photography technique for almost a decade. Now the Canon Collective is winding down due to COVID-19. All events have either been cancelled or will end by 31st October 2020. A statement was posted to the Canon Collective website citing the reasons and exactly when the events will shut down in each Australian region as well as their international events....

Canon has released a pair of new firmware updates for the Canon EOS R6 and the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III. And while the features they bring aren’t unexpected for a camera like the 1DX Mark III, they’re a welcome surprise for the EOS R6 that seems to be Canon announcing that the EOS R6 is classed as a serious professional camera. While both firmware updates contain fixes for their respective bodies, both of them add two new features to both cameras....

Canon has announced a new EF to RF 0.71x speed booster adapter. Like the speed boosters from Metabones and similar items from Viltrox and others, it allows you to use lenses designed for a larger sensor on a camera with a smaller sensor while retaining a wider field of view and, as the name suggests, effectively increasing the light transmission. The release coincides with the launch of the new Canon EOS C70 cinema camera, but could it add more fuel to the rumours that Canon is planning to ditch the EOS M camera system in favour of APS-C EOS R RF mount cameras?...

Even though Canon only makes two full-frame mirrorless bodies, they have been working on their EOS M APS-C mirrorless line up. And it seems to be paying off. According to the BCN ranking, which collections point of sale data at retailers throughout Japan, Canon is leading the way, at least for September. Canon’s biggest seller in September was the “EOS Kiss M”. For the rest of the world, that’s the EOS M50....

Capture One has announced the newest v15.3.0 update for Capture One 22. It brings with it a number of features for Sony and Canon shooters who want to shoot tethered and brings new tools like the Magic Eraser. It also sees a Tool Panel redesign, easier watermarking, support for the Canon EOS M50 II and EOS R5C along with a bunch of new Canon lenses. The company is also gearing up to release its Capture One iPad app later this month and the latest Capture One 22 update lays some of the foundations for that with Cloud Transfer to easily sync up and send files over to your iPad....

Now, the creator of the show, Cinematographer Matt Workman, has been forced to shut down the show in its current format over Copyright issues. Well, it seems a lot of info about the Panasonic GH6 was leaked overnight – and that Digicame-Info appears to be the new Nokishita. We went from a handful of new specs to the (almost) entire specs sheet being posted online and yesterday’s photos leak has turned into a full video from an Asian YouTuber who jumped the gun a little early, complete with English translation commentary. From watching the video and reading the specs sheet, it looks like there’s good news and bad....

This is a topic that I’ve seen come up every few months in some form or another. Removing photographers from the process of image creation. And every time CG makes some incremental improvement, getting closer to the appearance of reality, I hear doom and gloom from photographers that their future is in jeopardy and “they won’t even need photographers anymore in a couple of years”.
