Kandao has just released software that lets you take a video at 30fps, and slow it down to 300fps while still having smooth results. If you’re using the company’s QooCam or Vuze XR, now you can turn your regular 360˚ footage into super-slow-mo. If you’ve ever tried to slow down a 30fps video, you know that the footage looks choppy and unusable. Kandao’s software uses machine learning to fill in the missing frames and make the footage look smooth even when it’s slowed down....

I have to admit, this announcement has surprised me a little. Named the Ektra, after its classic 1941 rangefinder, it seems to hold one major difference. Well, aside from the fact that one’s actually a camera, and the other’s a smartphone. The difference is that this one appears to be Kodak in name only, being produced by UK based Bullitt Group. The Leica M6 film camera is one of the most collectable and sought-after film cameras out there on the used market. AI text-to-image generators have been in full swing lately. Even text-to-video has become a thing, now Meta has introduced its own. Just like the rest of these generators, Meta’s Make-A-Video AI model lets you turn textual prompts into short video clips. Make-A-Video offers three different styles of videos: surreal, realistic, and stylized. And while I still find it impressive that this technology even exists – even the “realistic” videos give me the creeps....

After Perseverance’s first photo from Mars, its buddy Ingenuity helicopter made its first flight on the Red Planet. It sent back the first photo from its inaugural flight, which is the first controlled flight on another planet. Ingenuity was made to test the first powered flight on Mars. It flew to Mars attached to Perseverance’s belly, so they landed together on Jezero Crater on 18 February 2021. You can also see them together in this “selfie” Perseverance recently took....

Perhaps you remember the heart-wrenching video of a starving polar bear taken by National geographic Paul Nicklen in December 2017. He and Cristina Mittermeier photographed and filmed the poor animal on the Baffin Islands in Canada, and at the time related the bear’s condition with global warming. However, in a recent article, Mittermeier admits that National Geographic “went too far” connecting climate change with the particular starving polar bear....

I’ve used light meters for as long as I can remember in my photography. While many don’t believe they’re still required with digital photography, I still always have my trusty Sekonic in my bag. They are very popular with film shooters, though. Light meter design hasn’t really changed all that much over the years, but one company believes they don’t really fit the aesthetic of modern film shooters. Negative Supply (you might remember their film scanning holder from a couple of years ago) believes most people are shooting old metal cameras and so they should have a metal light meter to go with it....

With the removal of ProRes RAW from the DJI Ronin 4D, forcing a price reduction in the 6K model, as well as its removal from Kinefinity cinema cameras, exactly what cameras might support ProRes RAW in the future has come into some doubt and whether other camera manufacturers would be following suit.
