Charles “Chuck” Geschke, one of the founders of Adobe, has passed away at 81. Geschke started the company with John Warnock and helped develop PDF, as well as other Adobe software. Adobe confirmed Geschke’s passing in a statement, writing that he passed away on Friday. Along with John Warnock, Charles Geschke founded Adobe in 1982 after they both left Xerox. It began as a start-up with HQ in a garage, and developed to be… well, Adobe....
For all those who are just starting off with Photoshop, Adobe has launched a free YouTube course to introduce you to the software and its most important features. Longtime Adobe evangelist Julieanne Kost is teaching you the basics, and even if you already have some experience – there may still be something new to learn. The course is placed in a YouTube playlist, and so far there are seven videos explaining some of the basic Photoshop tools....
So, the guesswork and speculation can end. Canon have now officially announced the 5D Mark IV DSLR. As expected, some photographers are a little underwhelmed, if the comments I’m seeing on Facebook are anything to go by. The video guys seem happy, though, mostly. But it does have a few fairly significant upgrades for stills photographers. The new 30.4MP CMOS sensor is one, sure it’s not the 50MP of the 5DS, but it’s still a nice jump over the Mark III’s 22....

After the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, Apple’s smartphone presence just grew and grew, ultimately becoming the top dog in the market. But last year, Samsung knocked Apple from their throne to become the world’s most popular smartphone brand. This year, findings published by IHS Markit shows that Apple has now also been overtaken by Huawei and Oppo, dropping Apple down into 4th place. The smartphone market as a whole is starting to shrink, with this being the seventh consecutive quarter in which the smartphone market has declined....

ARRI Fresnel lights are known for great quality of light, but also for being super-hot. But are they hot enough to cook breakfast on them? Apparently, yes! In this video, Sweet Lou Photography does a super-funny challenge of frying eggs using three different ARRI Fresnel lights. So let’s see how they perform. Atomos has announced that an update is coming for the Atomos Shogun 7 monitor recorder that adds ProRes RAW recording support when used with the Sony FX9 full-frame camcorder and XDCA-FX9 extension module. The FX9 is also soon to receive an update providing RAW video output over SDI in a variety of formats and frame rates. Initially, the Shogun 7 will offer ProRes RAW for 4K 60fps and 2K at up to 180 frames per second....
One of the biggest struggles with making video content is finding good music at a decent price. There are two main models out there for music licensing. On one, you pay per song and on the other, you pay a subscription which provides access to all their content for you to use in your videos for as long as your account is active. A new music service called Audiio appears to be based on the latter, offering an annual subscription for $199 per year (pretty standard these days), but to celebrate their launch, this $199 price will get you a lifetime subscription to their service if you sign up within the first 60 days....
Autel Robotics USA has won a pretty major victory over competing drone manufacturer DJI. The suit claimed that many of DJI’s consumer drones have been imported into the US and sold while infringing on Autel’s US Patent No. 9, 260,184. The international law firm, Steptoe, secured the win on March 2nd. According to the infringement suit, DJI violated Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which essentially makes illegal any imports found to be infringing on a US Patent, and other unfair methods of competition....
Well, we knew a B&H video for the Sony A7S III would be coming as soon as the announcement was official, but it looks like it’s leaked out a little early. It’s been uploaded to the YouTube channel House of Intent, although they don’t say how they acquired the video and I wouldn’t like to make a guess, although it is only 720p resolution, so it’s unlikely they had access to the original source....
With higher megapixel cameras and 4K footage becoming the norm, Raw files and videos are taking up more space than ever before. Large capacity memory cards are cheap enough that you can afford to buy a bunch to keep you going all day. If you own a camera with a dual card slot, then you can shoot your stills backups as you go, but video tends to only save to one card....
Film photographers all over the world had high hopes for the comeback of Kodachrome. However, it appears we’ll have to wait for it. Probably for a long, long time. The problems with film processing haven’t been resolved, so it may be unlikely for this iconic film to reach the users again. After announcing the return of Ektachrome, there were speculations about returning other types of Kodak film as well. Kodachrome was one of them, as Kodak was “investigating the possibility” of bringing it back....

Quick off the mark, Blackmagic has today announced a new update to the DaVinci Resolve 17 Beta. The new 17.1 version adds support for Apple’s new M1-powered Macs. The new update brings all of the recently released features of the DaVinci Resolve 17 Beta to the new M1 Macs, including the new HDR grading tools, redesigned colour wheels, next-generation Fairlight engine and all the rest of it. Literally, the only thing the new DaVinci Resolve 17....
So I’m down at the dock at the cottage and I decided that I wanted to snap a photo of my coffee to post a fairly typical, quick and easy Instagram banger. Since the purpose of this photo was straight to social, I arranged the composition and then pulled out my phone to snap the picture (because why would a manufacturer build a camera with Android to be able to do this on an actual camera…)....
When we first heard that Bowens was going into liquidation, and then the official announcement that came a few days later, it was the end of an era. After 94 years in business, one of the oldest flash manufacturers out there was closing for good. Or were they? At the time, it seemed so. But now, it looks like no, they’re back. Bowens was bought out by the AURELIUS investment company along with Calumet back in 2016....
Charging batteries is a pain in the backside. I remember when I used to shoot events with four Nikon SB-900 speedlights with SD-9 packs attached to each of them. That was 96 AA batteries I had to charge up the night before every event. Boy am I glad that more and more lights are switching to Lithium Ion now. Fewer batteries, and more pops per charge. But even today, I still have a lot of batteries and devices to charge....
When you’re editing photos, you probably use presets from time to time. But do you think you use them too much? I have stumbled upon an interesting video from photographer Hans Rosemond which could affect your view on presets. (Over)using them today may seem fun, easy and as a huge time saver. But what will happen ten years from now? Can your heavy reliance on presets eventually cost you your job?...
“We will go on the offensive” says Fujio Mitarai, Canon CEO, confirming that Canon are finally taking mirrorless seriously. The focus toward was confirmed by a manager recently, but it really only spoke about the entry-level. Now it looks like Canon is tackling the entire mirrorless market head-on if the slides and speech summary from Canon’s Corporate Strategy Conference anything to go by. The speech summary talks about IoT and AI, and how Canon cannot be complacent and must continue to “evolve and always innovate“....
