Winter is close upon us and with that comes the promise of getting outside in the freezing cold and creating some beautiful landscape images. Photo Tom gives us 7 tips to enhance our winter images. Two more tips of my own (from bitter experience I might add) would be to wear appropriate clothing. Base layers are totally unsexy but essential in sub-zero conditions. Hats, gloves, and layers are essential. If you get wet as well as cold you will not have much time before hypothermia sets in, and always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back....

I use my phone’s camera far more than I would have ever expected a few years ago. Sure, they never really compete with large sensor cameras and interchangeable lenses, but they’ve come a long way. I always have it with me. It’s more than good enough for a lot of the snaps I want to grab while I’m out and about. It’s convenient. But, that convenience doesn’t have to come at the expense of sloppiness....

Software giant Adobe has apparently fired 100 employees from its Sales department. This makes Adobe one of many tech companies slimming down in recent weeks. Employees affected by the layoffs were allegedly given the opportunity to migrate to other positions within the company. Bloomberg reports that the decision included shifting “some employees to positions that support critical initiatives” and cutting “a small number” of other jobs. In a company the size of Adobe, 100 employees is but a drop in the ocean....

You know that whole “was this photo shopped” debate? Well, things are going to get much worse. Adobe just showed a new tech they call VoCo. Here is how Adobe describes it: “#VoCo allows you to change words in a voiceover simply by typing new words“. And the demo that Adobe showed in AdobeMAX did exactly that. A series of cut and paste to waveforms magically changes what we hear in a sentence....

Adobe Spark is a new app from Adobe that allows users to create template based social media graphics (Spark Post), web stories (Spark Page) and animated videos (Spark Video) using a simple online interface (read our review of Spark Post here). To my fellow photographers & photojournalists, and members & leadership of NPPA: I have been a photographer since JFK was President, and a member of NPPA for 52 years. I have never been, nor thought of myself, as a “Lens-based worker.” I find no shame in calling myself, and those in related vocations, photographer or photojournalist. Let’s leave it at that. These days, that might disqualify me in some eyes for what I am about to say, but in spite of a current fad to dismiss anything aged or graying (or older than 32), I feel compelled to speak about the current state of affairs in photography in general, and at NPPA in particular, especially given the credit NPPA is taking for participation in the Photo Bill of Rights (BoR)....

Atomos has announced that they are working with Panasonic to co-develop Raw over HDMI for the recently announced Panasonic S1H mirrorless camera. Naturally, the device they plan to record to is the Atomos Ninja V 4K HDR monitor/recorder. Atomos says that this will be a free update for the Ninja V when released by Panasonic. Atomos has also worked with Nikon to support ProRes Raw recording to the Ninja V with the Z7 and Z6 mirrorless cameras, going so far as to have a Nikon Filmmaker’s Kit bundled with the Z6 and Ninja V....

Putting filters on ultra-wide-angle lenses isn’t usually an easy or inexpensive task. Sure, it’s possible, but you need to get some pretty large filter holders and filters to match. The trend amongst some lens manufacturers lately has been to support rear “gel” filters. Filters that sit behind the lens that you attach before you mount it to your camera. Aurora Aperture has recently announced their “next-generation” of rear mount filters....

When posing for photos, especially Instagram photos, people often forget about good taste and respect. Because of this, Auschwitz Museum is publicly urging its visitors to stop posing on the railway tracks that carried hundreds of thousands of victims to their deaths. In a recent tweet, Auschwitz Museum shared a few photos from visitors, asking them to show some respect to the site and to the memory of Holocaust victims....

Gigapixel images are something we mainly see at political events or sports games. But Bentley Motors has raised the bar of advertising and used this technique to show off their Bentley Flying Spur W12 S. Their new gigapixel photo is set in Dubai, and it allows you to explore the magnificent scene to spot their latest model of the car. Turning an entire room into camera obscura is a pretty cool thing. Finnish couple behind Bonfoton decided to make it easy, and they launched Bonfoton Lens – an optical device that lets you turn any room into a giant camera obscura. It’s simple to use, and you can quickly enjoy the projection of the outside world on the walls of your room. The Bonfoton Lens frame is a sort of an adapter that goes onto your black out roller blind....

Question: can AI vision systems from Microsoft and Google, which are available for free to anybody, identify NSFW (not safe for work, nudity) images? Can this identification be used to automatically censor images by blacking out or blurring NSFW areas of the image? Method: I spent a few hours creating in some rough code in Microsoft office to find files on my computer and send them to Google Vision and Microsoft Vision so they could be analysed....
