According to scientific estimates, more than 95% of Earth’s oceans have never been observed. As SciTechDaily points out, this means that we’ve seen less of our own planet’s oceans than we have the surface of Mars. The biggest challenge in exploring the oceans, though, is powering cameras, particularly for a lengthy amount of time. They typically have to be tethered to research vessels or require regular trips out to swap batteries....

Photographers and gearheads like to see specs and big numbers. Huge ISO, big megapixels, fast frame rates, whatever the specs may be. Those specs can be justifiably important to certain photographers, though. If you regularly photograph things that have certain technical demands, there’s no way around it. French underwater photographer and biologist Laurent Ballesta was announced as this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his enigmatic image, Creation, that captures camouflage groupers exiting their milky cloud of eggs and sperm in Fakarava, French Polynesia. Selected from more than 50,000 entries from 95 countries, the winners of the prestigious Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were revealed at an online awards ceremony. A winning image takes great dedication, and every year, for five years, Laurent and his team returned to the same lagoon....

Earlier this week, iPhone users noticed a worrying bug in the Facebook app on their phones. As they would watch videos in their feed, the app would open the camera in the background. Facebook reacted after a number of reports, and the company says that the bug has now been fixed. According to tweets, some users spotted the bug when looking at videos in full screen, and then returning them back to normal....

The close-up lens works as a magnifying glass that you can attach to a telelens. Looking at the Tether Tools Case Air was an interesting experience. It promises the same Camranger experience at half the cost, and a significantly lighter package. (we covered its kickoff here) I have used the Camranger before on tradeshows and it was very smooth. The Case Air appears to be no different. It provides several nice functions: sending the files you shoot into a tablet/computer; A basic monitor; some focus peaking and so on....

Aimed squarely at the beginning photographer, the Olympus PEN E-PL9 packs a lot of punch. It contains a 16.1MP Micro Four Thirds CMOS Sensor capable of shooting 4K UHD video. The PEN E-PL9 also features 3-axis sensor shift IBIS with 121 autofocus points, 8.6fps continuous shooting and a top shutter speed of 1/16000th of a second. YouTuber Gaston Shutters has shared several videos of the Sony FX3 along with some of the specs. His source, he says, tells him that this is basically the exact same camera as the Sony A7S III but in a slightly different body. It’s supposedly lighter than the A7S III in order to help those who want to take advantage of filming from Sony’s new Airpeak drone platform. Other than the form factor, according to Gaston’s source, the specs are basically exactly the same as the Sony A7S III....

Fujifilm has shattered backup storage records with a new magnetic tape backup solution that offers around 50x the capacity of current commercially available LTO-8 tapes – which hold around 12TB of uncompressed data. Fuji’s new format stands at a whopping 580TB of data storage, thanks to the development of a new magnetic particle called Strontium Ferrite (SrFe). The new system was developed in conjunction with IBM Research and provides a single tape with enough space to store the equivalent of 120,000 DVDs....

The Fujifilm X-T3 is just out, and on paper, it seems like a pretty powerful piece of gear. Jordan Drake of DPReview tested it out for video shooting and compared it to his favorite Panasonic GH5.
